Win #44 - Champions Trophy win

Two years after the 1983 World Cup win, India won the 1985 tournament in Australia. Similarly, two years after the 2011 World Cup was this victory in England. India have always done well in the Champions Trophy - the edition that was supposed to be the last version was its first solo win at the tournament, even though the final was more like a T20 match (reduced due to rain).

There were new players in the Indian lineup, compared to the 2011 World Cup win like Shikhar Dhawan, Ravinder Jadeja along with the old order like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli to present a strong lineup to the opposition. The domination was complete (just like the 1985 event) with India winning all the matches in the league as well as the knockouts.

The Indians defeated strong teams in the tournament:
  • South Africa by 26 runs thanks to knocks by Dhawan, Rohit, Jadeja and timely wickets by Umesh Yadav
  • West Indies by 8 wickets thanks to bowling of Jadeja and Umesh Yadav
  • Pakistan by 8 wickets again due to the spin bowling of Jadeja and Ashwin
  • Sri Lanka in the semifinal by 8 wickets with the bowlers coming to the party once again - Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Ishant Sharma leading the way
  • England in the finals by 5 runs in a rain-affected match.
After the first match, it was the bowlers who dismissed the opposition for low scores that were achieved easily by Dhawan and Rohit most of the times. A great all-round effort!
