Sunil Joshi as a left-arm spinner was very effective in driving the Indian spin strategy in test matches. In ODI's this was the match that he decided to imprint his presence on the match. Imagine India beating South Africa in an ODI for the loss of two wickets with more than 27 overs remaining! Rubbing your eyes? Do rub once again but in glee! India did just that in Nairobi in the second match of the LG Cup.
Ajay Jadeja was the captain of the Indian side that did not have Sachin Tendulkar, Javagal Srinath and Anil Kumble. Venkatesh Prasad and Debashis Mohanty were the pace bowlers plying their trade from the 1999 World Cup. Joshi had Nikhil Chopra and Vijay Bharadwaj as fellow spinners. The Indian batting was largely unpredictable with the fluctuating form of their main batsmen. On a pitch that was helping the spinners, the Proteans batted first. Sunil Joshi started plying his wares on the day that had the batsmen jumping in awe and shock. Batsman after batsman had no clue to the guiles of the canny bowler.
Just have a look at the bowling figures of Joshi to believe - 10-6-6-5! The batsmen he scalped included the likes of Herschelle Gibbs, Hansie Cronje, Jonty Rhodes and Shaun Pollock. This was probably the most accurate bowling against a test-playing nation by a bowler who had completed his complete quota. India romped home in style thanks to Ramesh and Ganguly's opening stand. But, the hero of the day was clearly Sunil Joshi.
